Embarrassing cultural clashes

Yup... I have many of these. First one I recall more specifically happened on my first day at Maputo International School. We had arrived to Maputo (in Mozambique) about two months earlier, and I had been so bored waiting for my start date of school that I baked to pass the time. I baked A LOT! - I mean like, trying out new chocolate recipes of huge cakes that I found online. My mum luckily was very supportive taking me around to find the right ingredients as she was too (and is) a big fan of chocolate (although strangely I'm not any more). We even rated the cakes based on how they tasted directly after being completed and then after a couple of days when they had set. I of course documented everything in a folder (that I still have).

Anyhow - the cultural clash - it was my first day at Maputo international school (I was 17 years old). As I was introduced to potential new friends during the day I did the Swedish way of saying hello which is to shake hands. This one girl came up to me and looked closer at my earrings (pearls were very fashionable at the time) and wanted to take a closer look. I took a step back. I Of Course Did Not want her to touch my earrings. Little did I know she was just trying to say hi - but through giving a kiss on each cheek....(also the most common way of greeting in Maputo which I later found out).......

Did she think I was weird - probably - did I know at the time - probably not - do I laugh about it now - YUP
